When your systems run into trouble, that’s where one or more of the three primary availability strategies will come into play: high availability, fault tolerance, and/or disaster recovery. While each of these infrastructure design strategies has a role in keeping your critical applications and data up and running, they do not serve the same purpose.

I wanted to give you exact differences between both of these terms because I feel they’ll help you make good Solutions Architect decisions in production situations. Achieving a network uptime of 99.999% (commonly referred to as “five nines”, which equates to 5.26 minutes of downtime) should be your organization’s goal. Unlike with fault tolerant systems, there will always be some amount of downtime with high availability, even if it is only a few seconds. VMware Fault Tolerance differs from the concept of high availability due to its capability in maintaining virtually no disruption to applications in the wake of a failure. A highly available system can prevent downtime, but if a node is lost, there is a delay in restarting its applications on another node in the same cluster. High availability vs fault tolerance

If high availability was expensive in pre-AWS days, fault tolerance was exceedingly expensive. There is a distinction between high availability and fault tolerance. Just remember, a highly available system has little to no down time and a fault tolerant system has zero down time and is The main difference between Fault Tolerance and High Availability for these questions would be the number of instances or resources that would still be running even if one Availability Zone (AZ) In simple terms, fault tolerance is a stricter version of high availability. HA focuses on delivering the minimal possible downtimes, while FT goes further by delivering zero downtime. However, in the fault tolerant model, the ability of a system to deliver high performance in the event of failure is not a top priority.
